Celebrate National Engineers Week 2019
This year’s Engineers Week theme — Engineers: Invent Amazing — makes sense to us, since we are continually amazed by all of the engineers we know and all of the amazing ways they make the world a better place. After all, INCOSE’s Vision is “A better world through a systems approach.” And that means we should be supporting any effort that celebrates our amazing engineering friends and that engages today’s students in any type of engineering.
Kicking off the weeklong festivities is Discover Engineering Family Day, to be held on 16 February in Washington, D.C., at the National Building Museum. Family Day, which typically draws more than 8,000 visitors annually, is packed with hands-on activities that both parents and kids can enjoy. Engineers across disciplines will be showcasing their projects and teaching participants new skills.
Future City, an engineering design competition for middle school students. The children imagine, design, and create a virtual prototype of a future metropolis. More than 40,000 students participate each year. This year, Future City is asking middle school students to respond to the challenge of Powering Our Future and design an electrical grid that can withstand and quickly recover from the impact of a natural disaster. The finals, to be held February 19, 2019, bring together the regional-winning teams from across the United States to Washington. The top five teams get to present their projects on stage, and a champion is selected.
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, planned for February 21, 2019, is a campaign to educate girls about how engineers change the world. The event aims to inspire girls and make them aware of career opportunities in engineering.
