Abstract: From 2014 to 2018 the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) conducted a large scale study of its next generation weather satellite constellation architecture. This talk will discuss major lessons learned from conducting that study. Among the topics discussed will be the selection and primacy of value models, the concept of architectures as classes of system alternative, and variance as a measure of significance. The study, known as NSOSA, has been the basis for NOAA's announced plans for moving to a hybrid constellation of traditional and non-traditional platforms and approaches.

Speaker: Dr. Mark W. Maier is a Technical Fellow at The Aerospace Corporation, and a recognized expert in systems architecting (the art and science of creating complex systems). He is co-author, with Dr. Eberhardt Rechtin, of The Art of Systems Architecting, Third Edition, CRC Press, the mostly widely used textbook on systems architecting. He has BS and MS degrees from Caltech and a Ph.D. from USC.
